Concrete Services in Hughes

Hughes is one of Woden's original 1960s suburbs, and a lot of the concrete here is the first driveway ever poured on the block — thin, unreinforced by today's standards, and lifted or cracked by decades of clay movement and the big street trees that give the suburb its character. Most of our work is replacing those driveways and paths, adding patios out the back of renovated homes, and pouring slabs for the knock-down-rebuilds that are steadily changing the streets toward Red Hill. We quote concrete in Hughes from a site visit, because the ground shifts from deep clay on the flatter streets to shallower rock as blocks climb toward the nature reserve. That difference changes excavation, base depth and the price, so we would rather see it before we write a number down.

  • Original driveway replacement — Cracked 1960s driveways broken out, the base corrected, and a new reinforced driveway poured in plain, coloured or exposed aggregate.
  • Paths & side access — Narrow side paths and front walks relaid with proper falls away from the house, often where old pavers or concrete have lifted.
  • Rear patios & alfresco slabs — Patios for extended and renovated homes, set level with new floor heights and drained so summer storms run away from the house.

What's under Hughes

Ground conditions in Hughes

Once the concrete is poured, there's no going back to fix what's under it. That's why we look at the ground here before we price a single square metre.

Reactive clay on the valley side

The flatter streets sit on clay that swells in wet winters and shrinks over hot summers. Base depth, reinforcement and joint spacing are set to suit rather than to a single suburb-wide spec.

Shallow rock toward Red Hill

Blocks rising toward the Red Hill reserve can hit rock not far below the surface, which may mean a rock breaker and stepped footings on slabs and retaining.

Mature street trees

Established eucalypts and exotics are behind much of the heave we see in old Hughes driveways, and they keep drawing moisture out of the clay near paths and slab edges.

Hughes concrete questions

Questions we hear a lot from Hughes homeowners before we come out to quote.

My Hughes driveway is lifting near a street tree. Can you replace it?

Usually, yes, but the tree comes first. Street trees belong to the ACT Government, and large trees on your block may be regulated under the Tree Protection Act, so digging in their root zone can need TCCS approval. We look at the tree and the root spread at the quote, tell you whether approval is likely to be needed, and adjust the base and reinforcement so the new driveway copes better.

Do I need approval to replace the verge crossing in Hughes?

Anything on the verge, from your front boundary out to the kerb, usually needs TCCS approval and must match the ACT standard drawings. The driveway on your own block normally doesn’t. Our quote shows which parts need sign-off and which don’t. Rules do get updated, so check the latest with TCCS before you lock in a date.

Can you pour the driveway on a Hughes knock-down-rebuild?

Yes. On rebuilds we normally come in once the house is close to handover, so heavy machinery is off the block and finished levels are known. We set the driveway to the new garage height and verge crossing level, work around any services and retained trees, and coordinate timing with your builder so the concrete is not damaged by the last trades.
