Concrete Services in Holt

Holt is on the western edge of Belconnen, and the homes run from 1970s originals through to more recent infill and the newer development toward the Ginninderra Creek side. Many blocks are a reasonable size, so alongside driveways we do a fair amount of shed slabs, caravan and trailer pads and back-yard patios. The ground is reactive clay, and the open western side of the suburb can sit colder on still winter nights than suburbs closer to the town centre, which matters when we schedule a pour. We pour concrete in Holt for driveway replacements, extra parking, shed and workshop slabs, paths and outdoor living areas, and we set out each job off a site check of levels, drainage and access for the concrete truck. Quotes are fixed and in writing.

  • Shed & workshop slabs — Thickened-edge slabs for garden sheds, workshops and steel garages, with set-downs for doors and hold-down bolts placed to suit the kit.
  • Caravan & trailer pads — Extra hardstand beside the driveway for a caravan, boat or trailer, reinforced for the weight and jointed to the existing slab.
  • Driveway replacement — Original 1970s driveways replaced and often widened, with a new finish that suits the house.

What's under Holt

Ground conditions in Holt

Once the concrete is poured, there's no going back to fix what's under it. That's why we look at the ground here before we price a single square metre.

Reactive clay on open ground

Holt's clay moves with the seasons. Driveways and pads are given a compacted base, reinforcement and joints spaced to keep cracking to controlled lines.

Cold winter mornings

Low-lying and open parts of the suburb can be frosty. Winter pours are timed around overnight lows and fresh concrete is covered so it is not damaged before it gains strength.

Run-off on longer blocks

Larger blocks shed a lot of water in summer storms. Falls and edge drains are set so stormwater does not pool against sheds or the house.

Holt concrete questions

Questions we hear a lot from Holt homeowners before we come out to quote.

Can you pour concrete in Holt during winter?

Yes, but we plan it carefully. Canberra frosts can damage concrete that has not yet gained strength, and parts of Holt get cold overnight. We watch the forecast, avoid pouring before very cold nights, may adjust the mix, and cover fresh concrete with blankets or plastic. Curing is slower in winter, so we also allow a little longer before you drive on it.

How thick should a caravan pad be in Holt?

It depends on the weight of the van, how it is supported and the clay underneath, so we do not give one standard answer. Caravan and boat pads are usually thicker and more heavily reinforced than a path, with a well-compacted base. We look at what will be parked there and how the truck or tow vehicle gets on, and quote a specification to suit.

Do I need approval for a shed slab in my back yard?

Many small sheds are exempt from building approval in the ACT if they meet the size, height and setback limits, but larger sheds and garages may not be. It is worth confirming with a building certifier before ordering the kit. We pour the slab to the shed supplier's specification and can work from an engineer's design where one is needed.
