Concrete Services in Cook

Cook is one of Belconnen's early suburbs, built from the late 1960s, and most of the concrete we see there has been in the ground for fifty-odd years. Driveways have cracked along the line of old tree roots, paths have dropped away from the house, and plenty of carports are waiting to become proper garages. Under it all is reactive clay, with rockier ground toward the higher, western side of the suburb. We pour concrete in Cook for full driveway replacements, patios and outdoor entertaining areas, garage and carport slabs, and paths around the house, and we treat every old slab as a chance to fix the base rather than pour new concrete over an old problem. Expect a written, fixed price after we have walked the block and checked the levels, the drainage and the trees.

  • Full driveway replacement — The most common Cook job — the old driveway removed, the base reworked and a new driveway poured, often widened for a second car.
  • Patios & entertaining areas — Back-yard slabs for pergolas and outdoor living, finished in broom, honed or exposed aggregate and set at a sensible step down from the house.
  • Carport-to-garage slabs — Slabs and footings for enclosing a carport or building a new garage, poured to the engineer's design where one is required.

What's under Cook

Ground conditions in Cook

Once the concrete is poured, there's no going back to fix what's under it. That's why we look at the ground here before we price a single square metre.

Reactive Belconnen clay

Typical of the suburb — it swells after rain and shrinks through dry summers, so base depth, mesh and joint spacing are matched to the site rather than guessed.

Fifty-year-old bases

Many original driveways were laid on a thin or uneven base. When we replace them we excavate to sound ground and rebuild the base instead of reusing what failed.

Drainage against older homes

Paths and patios that have settled toward the house trap water against footings. New work is formed with falls that carry stormwater away.

Cook concrete questions

Questions we hear a lot from Cook homeowners before we come out to quote.

Can you pour a new driveway over my old one in Cook?

We generally advise against it. An original Cook driveway has usually cracked because of movement in the clay or a weak base, and a thin topping over it tends to crack along the same lines within a few years. Breaking it out lets us fix the base, set proper falls and reinforce it correctly. We will quote it both ways if you ask, and explain the trade-off.

Does old concrete removal include checking for asbestos?

Concrete itself is not the concern, but older Cook properties can have bonded asbestos in sheds, eaves or fencing that sit near the work area. If anything we need to disturb looks suspect, we stop and recommend it is tested and, if needed, removed by a licensed removalist before we continue. We do not break up or dispose of suspected asbestos ourselves.

How wide can I make the driveway at the street?

The section inside your boundary is largely up to you, within any planning limits. The verge crossing is different: its width and position need ACT Government (TCCS) approval and must follow the standard drawings, with clearances to street trees, poles and stormwater pits. We check those constraints first so the design you choose can actually be approved.
